  5. Multi-pitch Lead Climbing Instructor (MPI)

Entering the Award System

Assistant Guide Training

If you have limited climbing experience but would like to start your journey towards becoming a climbing guide, you can complete the Assistant Guide Course. This course runs at least once per year.

Top Rope Guide Training

If you have an Assistant Guide qualification or have a reasonable level of climbing experience and are able to satisfy the criteria listed below, you may apply to join the TRG Training Course. You must be competent to at least the Assistant Guide Standard, as outlined in the SAREA Candidate Information Booklet.

Send a log book electronically to SAREA demonstrating a minimum of the following:

  • 6 months regular, outdoor climbing experience
  • 500 metres of top rope climbing within the past 3 years
  • Competent to climb at least grade 12
  • Competence with basic rope work, belaying and fixing anchors
  • Completed a number of abseils
  • Experience in a variety of cliff environments

Qualification Process

The details of obtaining the Top Rope Guide qualification are outlined in the Top Rope Guide Flow Chart.

Progression to the Top Rope Instructor/Single Pitch Guide and Multi-pitch Lead Guide or Instructor qualifications can begin after the Top Rope Guide qualification has been obtained. See the Qualification Matrix to determine the requirements at each level of qualification.

Costs

Assistant Guide Course cost is $275 for two full days of instruction. Assessment and registration costs are charged separately (where required).

Top Rope Guide course cost is $1050, which includes training, assessment and accreditation, paid in two instalments.

Current members wishing to upgrade to Top Rope Instructor/ Single Pitch Guide assessment cost is $350.

Multi-pitch Lead Instructor assessment cost is $800, which includes training, assessment and accreditation.

RPL Assessments cost is $350 (for each attempt), and then an additional cost of $250 for accreditation on successful completion of assessment.
